Fieldwork Team Leader (internal only)

About Us:

The Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation (WWCHAC) is a Registered Aboriginal Party appointed under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006. The Corporation holds statutory responsibilities for the protection and management of Aboriginal cultural heritage objects and places in Victoria. WWCHAC is the representative organisation of Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people and community. Additional functions of WWCHAC include, environmental land management, cross-cultural education, traditional welcome to country and smoking ceremonies, and cultural consultations.

About the Role:

In this role, you will provide leadership and support fieldworkers, acting as a crucial liaison between the field and office staff. You will play a key role in maintaining operational balance, ensuring clear communication, and upholding safety and compliance standards across field activities. You will attend the office one day a week and OHS Teams day to day activities to gain valuable knowledge and experience in the areas of safety management, field bookings and rostering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertake pre-assessment of on-site conditions for specific upcoming fieldwork projects. 
  • Act as direct phone contact for Cultural Heritage Officers for OHS issues and policy queries encountered during fieldwork and attend site where necessary to address these concerns or follow up on concerns. 
  • Provide an early morning contact for Cultural Heritage Officers and the Heritage Advisors to resolve any issues about non-attendance and replacement of staff; to also provide a point of contact to report incidents; and to resolve, where possible, incidents that arise during this timeframe. 
  • To follow up on persistent late comers or non-attendees in conjunction with Human Resources (HR). 
  • Inform and communicate information to Cultural Heritage Officers and provide updates to Office about any concerns or issues raised in the field to ensure two-way communication.  This communication will also include accessing complex information on Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs) and providing to all Cultural Heritage Officers, to ensure that they understand the requirements of the CHMP. 
  • Order and maintain Cultural Heritage Officers minimum PPE stock and provide mobile PPE resupply for fieldworkers. 
  • Make site visits to assess and resolve any site specific OHS concerns raised by Cultural Heritage Officers during fieldwork. 
  • Make site visits to assess any CHMP methodological concerns raised by Cultural Heritage Officers during fieldwork and provide on-site feedback to the Cultural Heritage Unit (CHU) office staff to assist in resolution. 
  • Maintain consistent contact (including a regular schedule of face-to-face visits) with all fieldworkers to discuss any other issues/concerns and report back to CHU/HR. 
  • Undertake site and CHMP activity area visits as identified by CHU office staff and Elders, reporting back to the CHU on results. 

About You:

  • Problem solving and time management skills including the ability to manage conflicting priorities.
  • Current drivers licence
  • National Police Check (or willingness to obtain)
  • Experience in a similar role
  • Knowledge and experience of Occupational Health and Safety, particularly in a field based, multi-site environment.
  • Critical thinking and solutions focussed.  
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Excellent stakeholder management and ability to work under pressure. 
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will be highly regarded.
