Yiagilang Ngarrngatj: Seeking Knowledge

Wurundjeri Woiwurrung people are the keepers of their traditional knowledge and history. The Yiagilang Ngarrngatj Research Unit at the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Corporation is dedicated to the ongoing understanding of the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung ancestors, landscapes and culture. Research is undertaken using diverse data gathering techniques including reviewing documentary materials, archives, artefacts and Wurundjeri Woiwurrung knowledge recording in recognition of the importance of cultural knowledge alongside documented histories.

The Unit, and the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Aboriginal Corporation as a whole, strives to ensure a culturally appropriate Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung history is visible to our partners and other stakeholders. Working in conjunction with the Corporations’ Cultural Heritage, Narrap, Education, Cultural Consultation and Water Units, the Research Unit is comprised of Anthropologists, Historians and Research Officers with extensive experience in cultural heritage, anthropological, genealogical, Native Title and historical research.

This overview document condenses and summarises a comprehensive Cultural Values Study commissioned by the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) as the second stage of the Birrarung Cultural Mapping Project to document in detail Traditional Owner tangible and intangible heritage values and places of significance associated with Birrarung and areas surrounding the confluence of Birrarung and Brushy Creek.

For our community the natural world is also a cultural space. We have a special interest in preserving not just our cultural objects, but also landscapes of cultural importance.
